Rural Direct is a new service which assists Scotland’s rural communities to access funding opportunities. Projects eligible for funding through the Scotland Rural Development Programme (SRDP) can include anything from refurbishing a village hall through to long term plans for community development. Options include management of archaeological or historic sites and the the management and repair of vernacular buildings.

Rural Direct, which is delivered through the Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations (SCVO), offers advice and guidance, including support through all the stages of the application process, and in addition can also help signpost you to other possible funding opportunities. In addition, it is recommended that groups contact Archaeology Scotland and Historic Scotland for specialist advice, if they are planning to work with archaeological material or sites.

October 2009 - Update from Rural Direct Team:

Changes announced to funding for rural communities
The Scottish Government has announced a major change to the way that rural community facilities will be funded through the Scotland Rural Development Programme. The Rural Community Services and Facilities option will shortly be transferred from Rural Priorities into the LEADER programme.

The announcement by the Scottish Government reads as follows:

Following the recent announcement by the Cabinet Secretary at the Rural Gathering near Perth we can confirm that the Rural Priorities Community Services and Facilities option will be shortly be transferred into the LEADER Programme, a mechanism of the SRDP which closely relates to the options's themes of community empowerment.

Therefore, following the Regional Proposal Assessment Committees (RPACs) sitting this November, all future projects will be assessed by LEADER Local Action Groups (LAGs).

Further details on the change will be available in the coming weeks and applicants are advised to check the LEADER website for further details as they emerge. Final applications already committed for the upcoming RPAC will not be affected and will be considered as normal.

The press release about the Cabinet Secretary's speech can be found on the Scottish Government website here.

At the moment, these statements are the only information available, but we will keep you informed of developments as we hear about them. You can also access up-to-date Rural Development news by signing up for regular email updates from the Scotland National Rural Network website.
