invite you to their

A one-day conference for all involved in community archives, co-hosted with University College London, School of Library, Archives and Information Studies.

27th June 2007
Darwin Lecture Theatre,
University College, London
10am - 4pm

  • Community archives represent a direct participation in the saving of our collective memory.
  • -- Community Archives Development Group Manifesto

Come along to the first conference aimed directly at those involved in community archives whether you're an organiser or a volunteer-participant, or work in a museum, archive, library or community-related organisation, with responsibility for links with community groups.

There are already perhaps 5,000 community archives in the UK at the present time, and they are growing in number and influence. Join us to share your thoughts and experience, to meet other people involved in preserving our shared memories and heritage from the grassroots up and perhaps to help shape the future of this movement.

Keynote speaker will be Tony Benn on the importance of archives to communities.

Topics to be discussed include:
  • Recent research into the social value of community archives
  • The opportunities offered by the Heritage Lottery Fund to community archive groups
  • website: the national directory of community archives in the UK.

There will be presentations by both well-established and newly formed community archives.

The conference is free of charge but booking is essential. (Closing date 15 June but book early to secure a place)
A limited number of bursaries will be available to assist unwaged attendees from community archives. For more information please contact Ruth Savage at
